I love doubletap ammunition and love that I can get their 400 GR bullet to reload my self in my 454 casull. However I was not prepared for the poor casting and quality control of these bullets. Many of the bullets aren't even truly round! There are several bullets that when I re-sized, were very clearly not perfectly round but somewhat oblong along a very heavy cast seam. This brings me to the downside. These bullets were not sized at all. Most of the gas checks were loose and when I run it through my .452 RCBS sizer they were very much moving material and sizing down. Despite the doubletap websites claim that these bullets have a clear layer applied so the bullets do not need to be lubed I was not able to see or remove any such layer. They were raw lead. I applied acetone, alcohol, turpentine and even slowly applied flame to one. There was no residue or layer that came off or was charring or smoking at all. These bullets are raw, unsized, unlubed bullets that at the very least need to be run through a sizer to fully seat the gas check. Seeing the variation in these cast bullets explains why I have such fluctuating groups with the loaded variant of this bullet from doubletap. If the quality control was tightened up so the bullets were consistent then this would all be ok but it is a lot of work to make these suitable for reloading.

Another super hard to find bullet

So I looked around and finally found a heavy bullet for my 460 Smith. As far as I know Grafs is the only company carrying this bullet. I had been previously using Acme 350 grain .458 cast/coated and resizing them down to. 452 with excellent results but as a reloader I'm always experimenting and wanted to try a 400 grain because data exists. Super fast shipping was experienced this time, I'm guessing they getting caught up.
Congratulations to Grafs for carrying excellent product.
If you want an absolute hammer in the 460 Smith try this bullet out the recoil is sustainable but you are pushing into 45/70 territory with a handgun. Thank you Graf for the selection of products you carry I always check you first when ordering anything shooting related.

Heavy for Caliber Bullets 450 Bushmaster

I wanted a heavy for caliber bullet for my 450 Bushmaster. Buffalo Bore makes 360 gr, but at $3 a round, it made more sense to reload with my Hornady press. Graf and Sons had a good price and fast delivery of 360 and 400 gr bullets plus the Hornady dies. When I go to Alaska, I’ll be ready for those big bear encounters.

400 Gr hardcast in 45 Win Mag and Encore Rifle

I Purchased a couple hundred of these hard cast bullets for use in my 45 Winchester Magnum Thompson Center encore. This rifle has a 16 1/4 inch barrel and I use a suppressor. I wanted the most energy I could get while still staying below the speed of sound. This cartridge and bullet combination along with Alliant 2400 powder & a CCI 350 primer was just the ticket. Very accurate and hits like a sledgehammer. Maximum pressure’s in this rifle, bullet, primer combo Proved to be Just barely over the speed of sound. A reduction of only 1/2 grain below max pressure was required in order to utilize the maximum power offered by this cartridge with the 16 inch barrel length. Very accurate and very powerful, while still remaining quiet! I will buy again!
