Nothing gained

I reload a lot of 38 SPL with 105 and 125 grain powder coated bullets and when using the regular 357 MAG/38 SPL expander die I noticed the base of the bullets often being shaved by the case mouth when seated. I thought the cowboy expander die would be better at adding some bell to the case mouth, but after using it to reload I wasn't impressed. The stem inside the expander die is so long that in order to get any bell on the case mouth, you end up expanding 5/16" of the case neck before being able to add a bell on the mouth. There is no way to get any bell on a case without expanding the full 5/16" length. You might think that additional expansion sounds good and would make seating bullets easier, and it does - but to lower the press's ram and remove the expander die from the case now takes considerably more effort and drastically slows the reloading process. The seating die is also of little value as I seat without crimping on the standard 38 SPL seating die, and then crimp on the next stage with a Lee FCD. Overall, I ended up just going back to using my standard 357/38 SPL expander die and seater and simply lowered the expander die, giving me more bell to better seat bullets without shaving them on the case mouth. This set might be more useful if you're loading heavier bullets that are longer in length where more expansion would be beneficial.
