Hornady Critical Defense 22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire) Ammunition 45 Grain Polymer Tip Box of 50

My Ruger Super Wrangler would not be my first choice in a self defense situation but if needed I wanted the proper ammo. Read many reviews and choose the Hornady 22 Mag Critical Defense.

Got delivered fast and in good condition from Grafs. Plan to use it in a Ruger Super Wrangler single action revolver. The extra bullet weight seems good for close-in uses in a handgun.

My choice of having a PMR30 was because of its light weight and low recoil. The natural choice for an ammo was the Hornady Critical Defense 22 Magnum 45 gr. I am overweight and suffer from a bad disc in my back that has led to partial loss of my right leg. In case of an extreme defensive situation, I am comforted by the knowledge that I can carry several hundred rounds without a struggle physically and still have nearly the same stopping power as the average 9mm.

Using this round in my PMR 30 gives me confidence in my quest for home defense. Since this weapon has no recoil and combined with this ammo, this is a great home defense weapon for my wife.

Anyone that owns a Kel Tec PMR 30 knows that they are very finicky with certain types of ammo, This stuff fed really smooth and the fun of 30 rounds is great !! For defense ammo this is the stuff to get !

I recently purchased a Rock Island Armory XTM 22 Magnum. They recommend nickel plated cases for best function of the pistol. Luckily, I had a box of this ammo and ran it thru this pistol. It never missed a beat. The pistol functioned perfectly and was very accurate at 25 yards. When I saw this on sale I purchased a brick of it.

Fast burning powder evident by the loud rapport and punchy recoil on a 9.5 inch barrel Single Six revolver. All other cartridges I have tried leave bunch of unburned powder (looks like fine corn meal) in the cylinder and barrel. This is normal since 22 magnum powders are designed for slow burn in long rifle barrels, combined with the inherent cylinder gap in a revolver and you will end up with unburned powder all over the place. It is very minimal with this load.
Also this load gives the best accuracy. I do bullseye style slow fire one handed shooting and easily get an inch group at 50 feet (all 10s) and 1.5 - 2 inch groups at 25 yrds (mostly 10s and some 9s) Pretty sure will punch ragged holes with an optic and a bench rest.
Shot my first 1000, halfway thru my second 1000 and got just one failure to fire. Probably it had no primer since I tried to fire it several times re-inserting and hitting different parts of the rim...
I have a feeling these are loaded very precisely, never witnessed a weak or a strong feeling shot in all those 1500 rounds, unlike other cartridges it is very common to get a few 'weak' loads once in a while...
Nickel coated casings are very clean and remain clean after being fired (tells me they expand and seal nicely in the cylinder) which helps to keep the chambers clean also. No issues extracting. Almost feel bad throwing them away.
I have a feeling this load will be equally effective as a 380 or 9mm in a self defense situation. I wish ruger would come up with the 22 magnum version of LCP II. That would be the ultimate carry option since the velocities to expand these bullets are easily reached in short barrells with this load.

VERY FAST AND ACCURATE OUT OF MY NAA POCKET REVOLVER. I DO NOT FEEL UNDER- POWERED. GOOD ENOUGH FOR HEAD SHOT AT CLOSE QUARTERS. YES, I WOULD RATHER CARRY A 45, BUT THAT WOULD BE FROWNED ON AT WORK. I AM CONFIDENT THAT THESE WILL DO THEIR INTENDED JOB.

Like these for my old Taurus 971 SS 8 shooter, I love them and the pistol loves them,, what more could you want..

Of the brands tested Hornady 45gr Critical Defense was the clear winner. From a tripod rest my 86 year old eyes
were able to put 5 rounds into a ragged hole at 25 yds that measured .363 at it's widest point. The nearest rival made a three shot group that measured .392. The worst group of five brands tested was .678 for five rounds.

I recently purchased a 6 inch S & W model 48 K - Frame in .22 Mag... This load from Hornady was designed for pistol, where most all .22 Mag Ammunition was all developed for rifle.... This gives the Critical Defense load a more desirable burn rate charge for operating in a 6" barrel revolver. The Hornady Ammo shoot great.

Bought these to shoot in a revolver, & am very satisfied. Accurate and no excessive muzzle flash. Will buy more.

Very accurate and expand well even from my Custom Bearcat 4" Revolver. Recovered bullets expanded from .340-.370". Highly recommended for 22 Magnum Revolver Shooters.

Excellent ammo for both my rifle and pistol. Both will hold a very tight group with this ammo.

I bought this for my two pocket light weights (S&W 7 shot and NAA Sheriff) and discovered it works great in the bigger guns too. GREAT all around ammo for when you need reliability. (NOT plinking in other words). Pricey for plinking so I use other stuff for that. Will buy more.
