Blackhorn 209 is a black powder substitute formulated for modern in-line muzzleloaders that use 209 shotshell primer ignition. It is non-corrosive, leaves very little fouling, and removes the need to swab the bore between shots. This listing is the 8 oz container of Blackhorn 209 muzzleloading powder.

  • Product type: Black powder substitute (muzzleloading propellant)
  • Container size: 8 oz (reduced from 10 oz in June 2022)
  • Ignition: 209 shotshell primer, in-line muzzleloaders
  • Charge measurement: By volume with a standard black powder measure, not by weight

  • Moisture: Virtually non-hygroscopic
  • Graf & Sons SKU: ACCBH1

What is Blackhorn 209 used for?

Muzzleloader hunters use Blackhorn 209 for consistent velocity and accuracy through a full day in the field. Hodgdon reports that it is virtually free of solid residue, so shooters can keep firing without swabbing, which keeps follow-up loads consistent and cleanup short. Its resistance to moisture keeps charges stable in damp hunting weather.

Blackhorn 209 also works as a cartridge propellant. Hodgdon publishes Blackhorn 209 data for metallic black powder cartridges, and one Graf & Sons reviewer reports consistent chronograph velocity in .40-70, .45-90, and .45-110 loads.

Which muzzleloaders is Blackhorn 209 compatible with?

Blackhorn 209 is designed for in-line muzzleloaders with 209 primer ignition systems where the primer is fully enclosed. Use a 209 shotshell primer and measure every charge by volume, because Blackhorn volumetric units are not equal to weight in grains. Never substitute smokeless powder for black powder or any black powder substitute, and start with published Hodgdon load data for your caliber.

Graf & Sons has supplied muzzleloader hunters and reloaders from Mexico, Missouri, since 1957 and is one of the largest powder distributors in the United States.

Good stuff

I have used this in my 40-70,45-90 and 45-110.
Over a chronograph it produces consistent velocity and accuracy . Yes it is expensive BUT loads require less product than BP..So it is a good value
